I have a QSA with five clasps and the following markings on the rim: 914, 3rd CL, J.Charlton, S.A.C.
The name is obvious, but what do the other marks represent? They are impressed.
Would appreciate your comments.

3rd Class Trooper i.e. the lowest entry rank into the South African Constabulary (S.A.C.)

This crowd have lots written about them which you can google but, in essence, they were a para-military force numbering 10 000 eventually whose prmary purpose was that of policing the Transvaal and Orange Free State during the Boer War and afterwards before they metamorphasised into the South African Police.

The 5 clasps were pretty standard i.e. Cape Colony, Transvaal, Orange Free State, South Africa 1901 and 1902

As a caveat to my earlier reply - Charlton's papers exist in the Bloemfontein section of the South African Archives.

I don't know where you find yourself stationed geographically but these can be secured through the services of a researcher and are well worth the expense.

Mandevu,

Welcome to the forum.

There is a page devoted to the SAC which contains some useful background information.

Best wishes

Many thanks for this information! I am located in Canada and actually researching this for a friend who is the grandson of Charlton. He also has a sabre and Boer pom pom shells Charlton retrieved from Modder River.
