David Sparks was chairman of Ladysmith Town Council from 1890-1894 and from 1897-1898. In 1899 Ladysmith was proclaimed a Borough and elected its first Mayor. Sparks served as Mayor from 1902-1904 and again from 1907-1908.

His QSA is named to Lt, Natal Carbineers.

In the Ladysmith Museum, there is a fragment of a picture of David Sparks that was damaged by shell fire during the siege:

I was interested to see that the medal has a SA '02 clasp. I have not checked the roll to see how common this is, but I suspect it is rare. Those Natal Carbineers' QSA's in my collection that have a date clasp are all SA '01.

You are absolutely right Brett. There are just 4 entries on the supplementary roll of recipients entitled to the SA02 clasp rather than SA01.
