Hello Adrian,
Your post here has been a stark reminder for me to consult the Cape Mounted Rifles files in WO25 at Kew, when I find the time, they were the most important Colonial Corps in the Frontier Wars, although, I think from memory it was from their ranks, that a number of the rank and file actually "defected" and joined the Xhosha, though, they were of Khoi descent, I think.
Adrian, have you any of those bloody great big double barrelled carbines that they were issued with back in those days, preserved in museums/collections?
I want one!
Kind regards Fran Kelley

What a super group to a man that served in both the Cape and Natal.

Mike I have a snippet of info for you which was taken from Ref DD7/65 whilst I was working on some CMR stuff.

Ronald McDougall attested into the CMR in King Williams Town on the 8th August 1898 at the age of 21 years he was discharged by purchase on what seems to be the 15th May 1903.

He found himself in the following areas: Hoopstad, Graaf Reinet, Middelburg, Gansfontein and Lady Grey.

He had 7 Defaults the worst being absent from Camp in Hoopstad on the 18th October 1900. He was given 14 days CB.

Not much but something all the same. The page confirms the QSA and KSA.

Again, great group.

Regards
Adrian

Hello Frank,

Yes, the CMR were most certainly the most important Colonial Corps at the time particularly in the Cape. The early members being a good lot of which some served in the FAMP. The same could also be said about the CP they also put up with a hell of a lot and were spread through out the entire Cape and in many instances looked after very remote stations.

You are correct about defections, I recall coming across some literature in the Cape Archives pertaining to such an incident. I should have had it copied!! Heaven knows now what the Refs were !!

I also want one of these carbines but they are few and far between. I don't recall seeing one locally.

Hello Adrian,
I just like it all, to be quite honest, I often have my fingers in far too many pies, the Anglo Boer War, often, has to play second place to the Transvaal War and indeed, both, come after Great War and WW2 flying
You can't have everything, but, as long as you are happy! :)
Kind regards Frank

Hi Frank,

I am with you on that one. I too have a wide interest. The CP is my main ABW interest with the Natal Police a close second which is followed closely by the CPG Regiment of WW1.

Being an old air force boy, I also really enjoy WW2 flying groups especially when they come with log books B)

But as you say you certainly cannot have everything and as long as you are happy what else matters ?? :)
