Good morning Patrick,
That was very kind of you, I'm sure she was very grateful indeed, I dare say it would mean far more to her than it could ever to you as a collector, moreover, a very good regiment too, the Manchesters, one that I've always liked.
I quite like the 1914 Star and Clasp and I think of it in just the same way as I think of a Victorian campaign medal, this is really just because it was awarded to a very limited number of people for their service in that late summer and and the few weeks that followed, before the civilized world went really mad.
So you are talking about single battalions and sometimes a given regiments second battalion too, though not, twenty something battalions of the same regiment, as was the case with the 1914-15 Star, I suppose an exception would have to be those units serving out on the North West Frontier.
You know I can remember went you could just go out and buy them for £30 or so for each trio, complete with Star and Clasp, how times have changed.
Kind regards Frank

Thanks. I'll give it a go anyway. Stranger things have happened- about 18 months ago I picked up quite cheaply a 1914 star to a Private in the Manchester Regiment. Out of idle curiosity I googled his name, number, and regiment and up popped a link to somebody on the Manchester Regt Forum trying to find out anything they could about the very same man. His grand-daughter in Australia now has his star. bought for what I paid. To me it was just a medal, to her it was an important piece of family history.
Regards
Patrick
