This question has probably been asked before! What is the minimum number of legitimate QSA's needed to get all 26 clasps? What would be the combinations on each one?

The reason I ask is that I have 4 QSA's which carry 19 clasps in total,2 of which are duplicates. This led me to wonder how many more QSA's I'd have to get to acquire the remaining nine clasps(leaving aside the cost and difficulty of finding the ones I'm missing). That, in turn led me to my question about the minimum number- if starting from scratch in an ideal world! All this is new territory to me and I don't know enough about possible combinations, so I thought I'd ask the experts.

The four mentioned above are

TH,OFS,ROL,TVL,LN - W Yorks
CC,JOH,DH,WITT,SA1901- 17th Lancers
BELM,MODD,ROK,PAAR, DRI- ASC
DOL,OFS,LN,BELF- 10th Mountain Battery


As you can see most of the 'missing' are at the difficult/costly end of the spectrum

One gets stymied pretty quicky by some of the rules:
1. No Cape Colony and Natal (never figured out the logic here)
2. No defence of and relief of K, M or L
3. No Rhodesia and Relief of Mafeking
4. No CC / Tvl / OFS / Nat and an action bar

If one just takes 2. that is already 6 medals right? Although I think a small handful of Bartons Fusiliers (100?) achieved both RoL and RoM.

In addition the fact that the battle bars were awarded on two fronts in less than a year. Even on one front;
- getting Talana and Elandslaagte very rare as on censecutive days (I think I've read on the forum that 9 are known).
- getting DoK and Paardeburg is pretty rare
- etc

Going to take someone much more knowledgeable than me to answer that question.

You can forget 3, Rhodesia and Relief of Mafeking were awarded on many occasions!

Agreed - but I think the rules are clear its not allowed [19]. I submit you have exclude that and other authenticated exceptions to the rules ??
