I've just been wondering if I'd still have been drawn to starting to collect QSA's if they had the ribbon of the KSA, which to my eyes is nowhere near as attractive or aesthetically pleasing as the QSA ribbon, and the KSA had a different ribbon. Maybe the KSA had to have fairly pale, insipid colours in order not to clash with the strong and more vibrant colours of the QSA ribbon?

Views on this are bound to be subjective, but I know that I tend to collect things which are pleasing to my eye.For example I prefer to collect bluecloth helmets with the Queen Victoria crown on the plate rather than the King's crown , as I much prefer the look of the plate on the helmet.

Anyway, just idle musing, whilst putting off doing something else more useful!

Hello Patrick.....

You would have loved the original ribbon design......

RED / WHITE / KHAKI / WHITE / BLUE

Take a look at this article about the Prototype QSA.....

Hi Mike

I'll have to borrow my wife's paints in order to see what that combination of colours looks like!

The medal is something else- like the sheriff's stars we wore when playing Cowboys and Indians long ago. Shades of the Milky Bar Kid for those in the UK old enough to remember the adverts. Fortunately somebody saw the light and they somehow arrived at a very attractive design.

Looks as though at least one of these was actually struck. I wonder if somebody has it in a collection somewhere?

Hi Patrick....

Yes they must have made at least two as there are two known to be in existence.....

The pictures are of a sample in my collection.....

There is a larger article and more photos in OMRS Journal. March 2007.....

Hi Mike

I take your point about star shapes in British medals, also including WW1 1914 and 1914-15 stars. However, it's the particular design of the prototype I react against, whereas the WW1 and WW2 stars are less fussy and classier in my opinion. Again, it's all in the eye of the beholder!

If you have one, where's the other?
