Mike,

Did you ever hear any explanation for the reversed inverted comma?

With thanks
David

Good Evening David.....

As a matter of fact yes.....

The list of names was given to the mint in the afternoon after the Strathcona's arrival in London..... The next morning was going to be medal presentation so they were in a hurry to get them named and that is how a number of medals were issued with the raised dates.....

The person who did the naming made up the unit section and just changed the Number, Rank and Name..... When he made up the unit section he inverted the apostrophe..... After the original presentation some of the medals which were un-named were collected up and sent for naming..... That is why you sometimes see non-inverted apostrophe's ......

I have also seen the "reversed apostrophe" on a QSA to Lovat's Scouts; double checked that just now. Oddly enough, another QSA to Lovat's with the same bars as the previous has a dot where the apostrophe would be expected to lie. I suppose just an error due to pressure of work.

Mike, Ian,

You can almost picture the men rushing to complete the naming of the medals in the evening before the presentation. Once they has made up the unit name and added the wrong character their error was enshrined in history.

Ian, it is interesting what you say about the Lovat's Scouts QSA. I will look out for these if I see more such QSAs on my travels.

Best wishes
David

Hi Folks

The first image shows 2 QSA's from the original presentation. Both have the bars Natal, OFS & Belfast.
The "Raised Dates" one is to 340 Pte A W O'Brien and the other one to 15 Pte E H Clark.
It is interesting, in view of previous comments, that the name O'Brien also has an inverted comma.
Clark's medal shows the result of the dates being removed.

Henk,

They are excellent pictures. O'Brien's naming is very interesting. It shows the error in the unit name was not isolated.

Best wishes
David
