Includes a Francis Fowke Memorial Medal (H.E.Rawson. Lieutenant R.E.). The Francis Fowke Memorial medal was established by the Officers of Royal Engineers as an Architectural Prize in the Corps and was won by Rawson in 1873.

Herbert Edward Rawson was born in Port Louis, Mauritius, on the 3rd September 1852 and educated at Westminster, and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He joined the Royal Engineers in 1872, was involved with submarine mining in 1874, then Bermuda defence, 1877; stationed on Malta 1885; on service with the Treasury 1880-84; Secretary of R.E. Committee and War Office Committee 1890-94; posted to Canada 1885-89, raised a submarine mining militia; was in command of the Royal Engineers Lines of Communication in Nata from 3rd November 1899l; afterwards Commander Royal Engineers, Natal District from 1st January 1902; was present at the Relief of Ladysmith, including operations on Tugela Heights from 14th to 17th February 1900, and at action at Pieters Hill. Served in Operations in the Transvaal in May and June 1900, then operations in Natal, March to June 1900 including action at Laing's Nek. Finally on Operations on the Zululand Frontier of Natal in September and October 1901. Member of Natal Defences Commission 1902; Natal Native Affairs Commission 1906-07; Chief Engineer and Commanding Royal Engineers, South Africa 1905-07. Chief Engineer Northern Command 1907-09.
Rawson was placed on the Retired List with Retired Pay of £500 a years, on attaining 57 years of age, on 3rd September 1909. His total service was 36 years, 357 days.
In addition he played cricket for Kent in 1874 and with the International Footlball (association) for England 1874 and in the final matches for the Cup, 1874, 1875. He died on 18th October 1924.
