The SAFF Casualty roll shows Sgt. Payne 28081 was killed at Taiboschfontein on 10/1/02; as was Pte. Smith 23629. Pte. Turner 24339 was dangerously wounded at the same place and died of wounds 12.1.02. Perhaps Wintjeshoek and Taiboschfontein were close geographically? I have had a look in the Times History index as well as that of the Official History and cannot find a reference to the 65th Coy or 17th IY Bn. being in action around that date.
Perhaps Elmarie might be able to assist you in finding the burial sites?
Good luck
IL.

I don't think this is correct Ken - there were, to the best of my knowledge, no Imperial Yeomanry troops ever in the field in Natal. Perhaps, like so many other SA place names/farm names, there is a multitude of them.

Looking in Steve Watt's 'In Memoriam' book, it show similar information as the 'South African Field Force Casualty List 1899-1902' showing that all three of these soldiers of the 65th Squadron Imperial Yeomanry, as recorded on the Military Campaign Medal and Award Rolls on Ancestry, were killed at Taaiboschfontein.

Steve Watt's reference book shows no other information other than the place of death for all three soldiers being at Taaiboschfontein. Considering most of his entries for soldiers in his book also lists the place of internment with relevant graveside information and remarks, unfortunately this is where the initial research stops.

To throw a spanner in the works and to add confusion, when looking up the Registers of Soldier's Effects it has listed two of the three soldiers in question as their place of death as being Concordia and the other Wintjeshoek.

Below is a map displaying Taaiboschfontein, which I hope is the correct reference as given by Steve Watt.
