Early in March [1901], when Lord Kitchener was at Middelburg, east of Pretoria, general Louis Botha came in under a flag of truce to discuss the situation. A meeting was held in General Lyttleton's headquarters, where Lord Kitchener was then staying, General Lyttleton being away in Cape Colony operating operating against De Wet. Nothing came of the negotiations.
