TOPIC:

Bedford is a rural town in the centre of the Eastern Cape. It was founded in 1854 when Sir Andries Stockerstroom began selling pieces of land from his farm, Maastroom, to raise money to rebuild his library, burnt by the British. The new township was named Bedford after his friend, the 8th Duke of Bedford.

Bedford lies at the edge of the Winterberg mountains in a narrow grassy plain, the Smaldeel.



During the Boer War, the Bedford TG and the Bedford DMT were established.
