Grahamstown, modern day Makhanda ,was founded 1812 after the Fourth Xhosa War by Lieutenant-Colonel John Graham as a military outpost during the campaign to secure the eastern frontier of Cape Colony.

During the Boer War it furnished the Grahamstown Town Guard and the First City Volunteers
