HI

I am researching a SAC "E" Troop QSA recipient "dangerously wounded at Rietpan on 28 August 1901".

Could anyone shed some light on this place and incident please ?

Regards

Adrian

Three casualties in SAFF E Div. for that place and date; one severely wounded, one slightly wounded and one dangerously wounded. Maurice Vol. 4 gives x5 "Rietpans" - none of which apparently features in any action on 28th August, 1901. Amery's index does not mention that place at all.
Not much I can see, I am afraid.

E Division were Free State headquartered. I know the men moved around but would Rietpan not be an action in the OFS?

I'll keep checking but also coming up empty handed.

As Linneyl and Rory have already posted, I also could not find a direct action / skirmish relating to the S A C on the 28th August 1901. I found mentions of Rietpan regarding the Guerrilla phase of the campaign which included Smuts and Warmelo earlier in 1901.

I had a look at the South Africa Field Force records for the same date.
There were a few engagements on the 28th August 1901. The 26th Mounted Infantry were engaged at Commando Spt (Spruit?)
The Kings Royal Rifles at Jaskrall and an action at Sterkfontein.

I found a Rietpan Farm, Rietpan Lake and a Rietpan cave.

I appreciate this doesn't answer your question but there may be some clue or a matter of elimination from the Rietpan list that may help you solve your quest?

Additional information on Rietpan enclosed.
