Hullo

I am researching my Gt Granddads involvement in the Boer War. I know he was in the 1st Glouc Regt and was awarded the QSA and KSA. The QSA has a Natal only bar. I also know that he then joined KDG in Aldershot in 1900/1901 - this may be a bit of a red herring though.

What I am a little confused about is that we always thought (through word of mouth in the family) that he was at the siege of Ladysmith. His medal record does not however
UK, Military Campaign Medal and Award Rolls, 1793-1949 for G A Perry
indicate the siege or relief of Ladysmith bar.

Unfortunately his record of service/pension records must have been one of the many that were destroyed (his older brother, however who was in the 2nd Batt Glouc. survived!!) so I am at a loss as to what happened.

I dont know if anyone could shed a light on this...could he have become a POW?

Any help gratefully appreciated :)

Hello and welcome to this forum,
I think both the best and obvious thing to do first, for the benefit of members of this forum, who are able to help, is to actually tell us your great grandfather's full name.

Hello Mark,
So are you saying you don't actually know your great grandfather's full name?
It is important, simply because, not everyone who joined the army served in only a single regiment/corps for the period of service.
If you have searched WO97, WO363 and WO364, looked at every surviving paper for every man with the correct and full name and not found him then you would have to approach things from a differant way.
Regards Frank

Hi Frank

His full name is George Edgar Perry, sometimes G A Perry (1 Batt Glouc medal roll) and also George Egar Perry(1911 census). He served with the Gloucester's from 1893-1900, we believe he then transferred to KDG from 1900-1911 when he completed his time with the Colours. He has a LSGC medal inscribed with 1DG. He then re-enlisted in 1916 in the KRRR and transferred to the AVC finally finishing in the Middle East as a Sergeant (MID). I have searched online in Ancestry for his pension records, but have found none.

Hope this helps,

Mark :)
