Hello

I am hoping someone can clear up some confusion I have with this man.

I have seen his medal roll record which seems to indicate he was a 2nd Lieutenant and was entitled to the QSA Medal with one clasp (Cape Colony). However, it also indicates that he transferred to the 20th Hussars on 10 November 1900.

I have not been able to find him on any other medal rolls which I am surprised by. I also thought that the 20th Hussars didn't arrive until 1901. Am I wrong on this?

Later newspaper reports state that he had recently returned from South Africa. These are from January 1903.

I would be grateful for any information anyone might have about this man or to be pointed to the right place to find out.

Many thanks
Max

Max,

He is listed on the roll for the Royal Lancsetsrs with a note saying the medal was issued off that roll. The 'To 20th Hussars' note may reflect a temporary assignment.

Have you traced him through the Army Lists?

Best wishes
David

Many thanks for your suggestion. Last night I checked the Army Lists. I found him on the one for the 20th Hussars for 1901 as a Second Lieutenant with the date 10th November 1900.
I also found him on the equivalent list for 1903 so he was still with the 20th Hussars then.

I have now traced him on their medal roll. There is a note saying that the roll of the 4th issued him with M and CC clasps and also a side note that he served in the militia in 1900.

Two further questions if anyone could help.
1 Does serving in the militia in 1900 refer to 4th Lancasters or to something else?
2 When he joined the 20th Hussars in November 1900 would he have left South Africa to do so? I believe they didn't arrive in South Africa until late 1901? If not who would he have served/fought with in 1901?

Apologies for my obvious ignorance in these matters.

Thanks
Max
