Found a family headstone which mentions a man who died in South Africa. Does anyone know if he was military?

Frederick John Gornall, died in South Africa, May 1900, aged 20. From the Blackburn/Preston area.

Possibly this is your man: "F.Gornell, Pte, died of Disease, Dysentry, Ladysmith, SALH" from Palmer roll. No date, no reg. number. I think I have the SALH roll on CD and will see later today if there are more details there.

Me again. I had a look on my SALH roll and "1391 Tpr F.GORNALL, SALH" is on P45 of the roll. No mention of his demise on that roll that I could see. He had previous service with NVAC. His QSA with bars TH and RofL was issued to his Father who came from Blackburn. Hence, the headstone has to be your man.
Best regards

That's great, thanks very much. I shall have to look up the Blackburn newspaper for a possible report of his death.

If Frederick Gornall's parents are shown on the stone as John and Alice Gornall, then Trooper Gornall of the SALH is indeed your man.

Yes, they are; thank you, Frank.

It's amazing how a country church can hold a mention of an ABW casualty. There was a second family gravestone there with a South Africa mention but he (Henry Calderbank) had died at Bloemfontein on 20th July 1899 so too early to have an ABW connection.
