Hello, welcome here,
I dare say he would have found his time spent in South Africa to be very different than his prior life at home in County Carlow, he was nineteen, a member of the Militia, he was probably swept up in the fever that was very much in evidence across the whole of the country upon joining the old toughs in 1899!
A very typical lamb to be sure!
Again welcome here,
Regards Frank Kelley

Well, he certainly did travel, I suppose time spent in the Militia wetted his appetite too, but, he was certainly present for the whole of the guerrilla phase of the war and saw it out to the bitter end and just beyond, the immediate post war situation in the Transvaal was actually quite dangerous, certainly no place for the faint hearted.

I would add that the rank and file in this particular regiment were certainly not men who were idealists or subject to any sort of profound irony, they were very hard indeed and quite frankly, many enjoyed it.
