I'd just go with one of the published histories if I were you, easy to buy on line, moreover, they don't all have to cost a fortune either, perhaps consult the NAM too and take it from there, also, I would talk to Brett Hendey on this forum, I suspect that secretly this is a favourite regiment of his, although, I might be wrong, but, he has been a long term member of this forum, I'm really quite new here and Brett is, after all, in Natal, sadly. a considerable number of the regiment lost their lives there during the war.
Anyway, start off with a good book, in addition, there is a RDF forum you could look at and join, I do not know how good they are though.
Look after those medals too, what first struck me about your man, was that he joined the regiment at the point they would have been appearing in the press because of what was happening to the Natal Field Force, just seven months later, he is out on the veldt himself.
