65 BTY took part in the battle of Magersfontein, then pursuit of Cronje and at Paardeburg and then in other actions on the way to Bloemfontein. Between June 1900 and December 1901, one section was at Sannah's Post, another at Welgelegen and one about Vet River. In 1902 the battery acted as Mounted Rifles and took part in very many drives. This info from Stirling's "Our Regiments in SA".
Later today I will have a look at the 65 Bty roll and see what clasps your man earned.

Had a quick look on my CD of RA; on the main and supplementary rolls it has "78761 Gnr. Daniel Mackenzie" entitled to clasps Cape Colony, Paardeburg, Dreifontein, Transvaal on his QSA and SA1901/1902 on his KSA. A marginal note says "to No.7 Depot, RFA 13/7/02". Others might be able to tell you if there might be personal papers somewhere. Do you have Daniel's medal/medals?

IL, thanks for the quick response, no I do not have his medals, just a copy of his service record which is quite scant in detail, looking for more information about him in his Army days. He also served in India between 1890 -97. Rumour in the family is that he came back to England, was demobbed and returned to South Africa later on in about 1904-5, supposedly working in diamond/gold mines, no contact since then with any family members. Tried researching in South African websites found them very difficult - any tips in where/how to search there?

Glad to be able to help a little. Regarding his post ABW life in SA, all I can suggest is that you try the "contacts" part of this site. I don't know if his battery did active service in India between 1890-97.
Good luck with your search

IL,
Thanks for your help so far. On his service record it points to service in India from 1890 - 97, from what I have discovered it appears he was in the town of Jalundar, about an hours drive from Amritsar in the Punjab. We are going to India in April so we are planning to visit Jalundar to see if there are any Army memories in the town. Any information about India would be helpful, or a steer in the right direction.
It would be great if I could track down his medals, you say he should be entitled to QSA and KSA with a few bars.
Regards
Lin
