Born 1872, died 1938, interred at St Michael's Church, Ainstable, Cumberland. Captain Aglionby was Governor of Winchester and Exeter Prisons and lived later at Poltimore House (Devon).

I haven't seen anything online regarding his military service. Does anyone know of anything about him?

I had a run through some references and the closest I could come up with is on my IY CD: "Arthur Charles AGLINBY Sjt, 12385 67th Coy., I.Y.". Very uncommon surname and, from personal experience, an uncommon surname is subject to all sorts of misrecording

Hello

It is the man identified by Ian - surname is recorded in the medal rolls as Aglionby.

Quick x-ref between WO128, Ancestry and the gravestone confirms. On enlistment his occupation was "gentleman".

He doesn't appear to have had further military service (apart from the militia perhaps), so may have been a colonial administrator of sorts, later Governor of Exeter and Winchester Prisons. See landedfamilies.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/55...y-and-drawdykes.html

Definitely a "gentleman."

"This ancient Cumberland family traces its origins to the 12th century, and were leading citizens of Carlisle and landed gentry from the early 16th century."

Thank you, Ian and Meurig. It was an interesting gravestone to find.
