I am at a stalemate in terms of my family research and am hoping you may be able to assist. I am looking for records for my great-great grandfather who was an Architect-Engineer for the Royal Engineers in the 2nd Boer War. I have very limited information on him, most of which comes from an old family letter and census/marriage data. This information is as follows:

Name: Thomas Shepherd
Born: About 1870
Spouse: Laura (Gibbs) Shepherd
Married: 1897
Children: Jessie Shepherd (Born in Cape Colony, Cape Town, SA about 1899) and Thomas Shepherd (Born in Sheffield, England on August 3rd, 1900 while the family was on leave)
Died: About 1903 in South Africa, aged approx. 33

I am at a loss to find his military records through WO97 as he died in the war. I need to find more information on him (i.e.; date/place of birth and parentage) in order to continue my search on this line of the family.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

On the medals rolls is this man:

26010 Eng Clerk Staff Sergeant T Shepherd. Served in the Engineer Services for RE Staff. Awarded the QSA with clasp CC and the KSA. He died 2 Jan 1903. He was MID 4 Sep 1901. His QSA was sent to his widow on 30 Apr 1904 and KSA 4 Feb 1904.

There are no papers for him on FindMyPast.

From this information could you locate his death certificate and work back from there?

The RE Museum may also be able to help. Their reference for him is 7/211:200.
