Hi,

My great grandfather, Edward Slater, appears in a photograph that was taken in Pietermaritzburg. I have looked for any military papers, but cannot identify which E Slater he might be from the information that was given.

Could someone help identify the uniform and hopefully I can then tie him to a record entry.

Many thanks

Sally

Hi I have had a look at the uniform, it is not a regular Cavalry Uniform but is an Infantry type tunic, could be Artillery or Mounted Infantry, not Imperial Yeomanry, unable to decipher the Collar Badges or on the centre of the Belt Buckle, but to me they appear to be the Sphinx, but I am afraid I have forgotten the Regiment, sorry not to be able to confirm,

Will do :o)

My only clues for timeframe would be loosely around 1894 - 1898. Edward was born in 1872, married in 1893 and a photograph of him on his wedding day looks to be similar to his age in the military photograph.

He's in Lancashire for all the census years so I'm guessing that the decade between 1891 - 1901 is when he goes to Pietermaritzburg. I have a photograph from around 1902/1903 and he's missing an eye after a shuttle flew out of a weaver's loom so I know for sure the shot is from before then.

I'm going to have a go at manipulating the original scan to see if I can enhance either the helmet or collar badges.

Thanks again, Norman.

Kind regards,
Sally
