Helmet photograph close-up - Not at all clear, but perhaps a female profile within the frame??

A potential candidate for the uniform is The Duke of Wellington Regiment (West Yorkshire). They appear to have been in South Africa in 1893.

(Sorry for the multiple posts, Norman :) )

Kind regards,
Sally

Hi,

That collar badge reminded me of the West Riding Regiment.

Sally,

There are papers (on FindMyPast or in the National Archives) for Edward Slater. You will be able to search the site to narrow the match if you can determine his regimental number?

Best wishes

Thank you, David.

Yes, now I too think he was with the West Riding Regiment. I have seen a drawing of the uniform from the 1890s and it looks pretty much the same.

Sadly, none of the names on FMP match for my Edward as he was born in Blackburn in 1872. There aren't any Slaters that match that birth year and place, and the ones close enough geographically state different father's names as NOK.

As I've now been able to confirm that he's not on the Boer Index on FMP either, he must have come back to England or gone on elsewhere before the Boer War started. I know he must have visited England reasonably often as his wife has 4 children between 1893 - 1899 :)

Thanks very much for your input, it is much appreciated.

Kind regards,
Sally

Sally, No problem, this is very interesting to an old soldier like myself. My Great-Uncle served with The Imperial Yeomanry (Glamorgan) from 1900, You might be able to find that Helmet Badge on Google or even E-Bay. I think the solution appears to be near. Good Hunting Norman
