Hello everyone, very excited to find this website - have been working on my family tree for quite a while now, and have come to the area of the Boer War - my gr-gr grandfather was part of the 67th Battery Campaign.

Would love some help on getting/finding any information I can regarding his service. Is there any pictures that may include him at his young age ? Also would I be able to find his registration forms, which would be able to help me locate some information on his parents names.

I have also found in the photo book - a picture of Frederick in his uniform - let me know if there is a picture for service men, and I will upload.

Thanks so much, Kelly Billett

Hello Kelly, welcome aboard.

Not sure if this is of any help? 15685 Driver Frederick Billet, 67th Battery, Royal Field Artillery. The Queen's South Africa Medal (QSA) roll (WO 100/142 pg 164) shows that he received the QSA with the following clasps: Talana, Defence of Ladysmith, Laing'ss Nek, & Transvaal. Then on WO 100/142 pg 175 it shows he received a South Africa 1901 clasp.

From the clasps you can see Frederick was present at the first battle of the ABW, Talana. He also lived through the Siege of Ladysmith and then fought at Laing'ss Nek before doing service along the Natal-Transvaal border. He must have had quite a time in South Africa before the 67th Bty sailed for India in November 1901.

Do you perhaps know his place and year of birth and names of next of kin? There are a few service records for some F Billetts that survive so it may be possible to identify if his is amongst them.

Cheers,

Mark

Kelly,

I echo Mark's welcome to you.

I have been researching Talana for a book to be published in 2012. I have an entry for F Billet but is contains only the basic information:

Billett, 10685 Driver Frederick, 67th Battery, Royal Field Artillery | QSA (5) Tal DoL Tr LN SA01 | Ref: QSA: WO100/142p164 Suppl: WO100/142p175

I have searched for but failed to find any service papers for him.

There is a Great War MIC for a Frederick Billett, number SR/9535 and 284535, who served in the RGA and earned the BWM and Victory Medal.

Best wishes
David
