My wife's grandfather, TFS Rudd, served in the RAMC in South Africa. His British service record shows he joined up, in UK, for service in South Africa in Feb 1900 and was discharged 'at own request' in UK in Sept 1901. He is shown as serving 1 yr 45 days in 'South Africa' which presumably includes time on troopships to and from SA. However he also held both the QSA medal (with clasps 'Cape Colony' and 'Wittebergen' and the KSA medal with clasps 1901 and 1902 so must have served at least 18 months in SA. In 1912 he joined the NZ Army and on his service record here it says he was in both RAMC and CMSC, and that he was wounded at 'Mitchell's Drift' in a night raid by Gen Christiaan de Wet.

We have been unable to find his name in the nominal roll of the CMSC, or find anywhere named 'Mitchell's Drift' and would appreciate any help.

AckrillJ,

Welcome to the forum.

There is a 13441 T F S Rudd listed on the QSA roll for the 22nd Bearer Company, RAMC (WO100/223p236) with clasps Witt and CC. A note says he was invalided to England. The roll is dated 5 Sep 1901.

He is also listed on the QSA roll for the 2nd Volunteer Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers (RAMC) for the same two clasps and a not saying he was from the 22nd Bearer Company. WO100/225p155 refers. His initials are listed as F T S.

I cannot see his KSA entry. Can you tell me how his KSA is named please?

Mitchell's Drift is a name I don't recognise. Do you have a date for the injury?

Kind regards
David

Thank you for your reply. I don't have any information as yet of when Fred Rudd was wounded, just a mention in a newspaper article about him when he retired from the NZ Army in 1943. This also mentions Mitchell's Drift.

We haven't got his medals, but are trying to check the engraving with the grandson who does have them.

Regards

John
