I am trying to find information on my great grandfather William Curtis born in Shebbear, North Devon, UK on 29 April 1873 died Great Torrington, Devon UK 25 May 1951.
All I know is that my father told me he was in the Boer War.No information of his regiment or rank are known. I have searched for a long time finding nothing. I have a photo of him in uniform but he does not have a cap on. Can anyone help?

As you know the full name, DoB and place of birth you can search the service papers held on FindmyPast.co.uk and Ancestry.com.

Good luck!

Many thanks for that information Meurig. I'm not used to searching for military records - have just been Googling whatever I can think of.

Thanks you for that info Mark. Is it the only one that close to Devon, because if so it could very well be the correct one.
I will get a friend to check in London when she goes - I'm in Oz.

Hello Margaret,

That record was the only William Curtis I could find. There are however a number of W Curtises on QSA medal rolls(more than 80). I've included three that might be him. However, there are records for artillery, engineers, service corps etc as well as men in regiments from counties further afield:-
6015, 1st Battalion Devonshire.
603, 2nd Battalion Wiltshire.
3570, 2nd Battalion Gloucestershire.

Best,

Mark
