Hello Mark,
You are clearly the man to see when it comes to Natal History! I do have a several South Africa 1879's to local Colonials, Rory's last post has got me thinking about them again, not to sure where to start when it comes to research, one of them is an officer in the Natal Native Contingent, any thoughts would be most welcome! Sincerely Frank. |

Thanks Frank, I think Brett is our Natal man. I do have a keen interest in the 1879 Zulu War. If you send me a private message with the man's name I'll have a look and see if I have anything on him amongst my stuff. You might be able to find something on him in the Pietermaritzburg Archives but from what I hear they seem to be in quite a mess. It might be worth checking the SA Archives online index for a death notice listing. If you found one you could possibly ask a researcher to retrieve it and that might give you some good info on your man.

Mark,
Thanks for the link, I'll sit down and have a good look though the site, I have really no experience with the archives in South Africa and in the past I have used Audrey Portman for odd bits, such as papers for the SA Infantry Brigade of WW1 and Cape Police etc from the Boer War period, to be honest, it has been Jameson Raiders that have proved to be the biggest stone in the shoe thus far! Kind regards Frank. |

Frank, successfully accessing the various archives in South Africa can be difficult in the present climate of indifference to preserving the country's colonial history. Jameson Raiders ! A most interesting lot. Cheers, Mark |

Well done, Adrian ! This is great ! I would suggest reposting it in a thread all of its own because it really deserves the attention of a specialist thread.
Cheers, Mark |
