Thank you all for your help. As I said it was the expert at the Who Do You Think You Are show about 10 years ago that said the man was in the 17th Lancers. The military expert from the magazine of the same name did not dispute it when I sent a query to him. John Carson who I thought it was I have since found out joined the South Lancashire regiment in 1894. He served at home and then India. He went to South Africa for 7 months in 1902.
He was discharged in 1906. His Younger brother Francis joined the Lancashire Artillery in 1900 but was struck off in the May for not showing up. During the first world war he joined the Manchester Regiment. The last brother Thomas born 1888 joined the Kings Liverpool Regiment in 1907 but transferred to the Royal Navy in the July of that year. So it seems the photo cannot be any of the brothers unless someone out there can tell me different.
I am totally confused about regiments and who it can be.
