I have had the photo identified by a military person at the Who Do You Think You Are event and by a military expert from the magazine by the same name. Both people say he is dressed in the 17th lancers uniform. Because the photo is hand tinted it was taken about 1900. It belonged to my Gt Grandmother. She claimed it was one of her sons. The only son close enough in age was John Carson. Thomas would only have been 10 in 1900. John would have been 24 and his brother Frank would have been 20. I thought it was John until recently having found a Corporal John Carson in the Imperial Horse unit in S Africa being wounded in October 1900. However I have since found records for John. I know he his mine for sure as his siblings and Father match on his attestation when he enlisted in the S Lancashire regiment in 1894. So he can not have been in the Lancers in 1900. I am now stuck with who he might be. Hence I need to look at the list of names for the 17th Lancers to see if there any that could have a link to me.

If you have Ancestry.com you will find the complete list of the 17th Lancers that served in South Africa.

I tend to agree with your two experts, so a 17th Lancer, but, I think it is earlier than 1900, I cannot see anyone with those names in the regiment for the period in question.

Hi. I am a bit late with this but I wanted to comment on the picture posted on this page, of a young cavalry corporal. You think he is 17th Lancers but that is wrong. He is wearing the uniform of the Hampshire Carabiniers Yeomanry.

I attach a photo of a corporal of the 17th Lancers of the same period for comparison.
