I have found my great uncle, Caleb Edwin Jesse Irving ( C E J Irving ) in the Kimberley Volunteer Regiment from 1899-1902. On this website. He was born in Greenwich, Kent, England, 1871. I assume he travelled to South Africa before 1891. Because he is not on England census in 1891. I am trying to find out more about his time in Kimberley, and the Kimberley Regiment. He married Elizabeth. And they lived in Pretoria. In 1908 he returned to London, England for a short stay. I am wondering why he emigrated to South Africa. On the ships passenger list it gives his trade as an engine driver. He returned to Pretoria 1908. And then he was admitted to the mental asylum there. He was a patient for three years and then was discharged.
