Your right Frank I have came to the conclusion that Joseph didn't serve in the Boer war or any conflicts, I have searched through Ancestry- Uk Military campaign and medal awards and there is nothing for Joseph.

But just for interest whilst looking I have came across a No.2 15 powder battery. R.F.F.A

His will states he was in the 74th field battery Royal Artillery.

I had a look in the 74th FB roll and the only "Johnston J" has number 726.
