Did my great great great Grandfather, John Henry Hunt Rich, take part in the Anglo-Boer war? How do I find out? I have so little info about him, although I do know that he was married (for a second time) in Cape Town in 1879.

Any help appreciated.

Thank you

Hi Blacksmith, I had a quick look and find several men J Rich on the rolls but they all appear to be in Imperial units. I presuming your ggg would have been amongst the locals if he served. I also checked the 1877-9 rolls and can't find anything there either. I'll double check tonight when I have some time to make sure I didn't miss anything.

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Blacksmith, here are some possibilities from local Cape South African units with just the initial J:
578 Pte. J Rich, 1st Battalion Port Elizabeth Town Guard.
1716 Pte. J Rich, Duke of Edinburgh's Own Volunteer Rifles.
593 Pte. J Rich, Queenstown Rifle Volunteers.

If he married for the second time in 1879 by 1899 he likely was no youngster.

Cheers,

Mark

Thank you, it was a shot in the dark really. I know my great Grandfather was born in Cape Town c1886 and that John Rich married his second wife there but I don't know anything else about him except it is possible he lived on the slopes of Table Mountain.

Is it possible to get copies of marriage and or birth certificates from Cape Town?

Thanks again for the info provided.

Mel, if he died in Cape Town you could likely find his death notice in the Cape Town Archives which should give you quite a few details of his life. You'll need to find a researcher to access the record if you aren't able to do it yourself.

Cheers,

Mark
