If a man was born in the Orange Free State, lived and farmed there. Why would he join the Cape Rebels? I thought it was only the men who were born and live in the Cape Colony that fled to the Boer republics to help fight the British were know as the Cape Rebels.

If you are thinking of someone specific what commando did he fight with? Anyone could join any commando.

The Cape rebels did not flee to the OFS to join a commando, the whole point of the repeated Boer invasions of the Cape was to encourage rebellion, which, in the grand scheme of the war, failed, despite a number of Cape citizens joining the invading commandos.
