An ancestor, William Stewart, was a Sergeant in Damant Horse during the Boer War. He was previously in Rimington's Guides from the end of 1899. I am aware of the medals and bars he was entitled to. His Certificate of Discharge stated he enlisted at Maitland on 22 April 1901 and served 247 days with Damant. His discharged was confirmed at "Friedsport"??? and was signed by Sgt or Lt Davidson? ....Adjt on 19 Dec 1901. The writing is hard to read. Would anyone know where or what the actual name of Friedsport is?
We also believe that although William returned home to Scotland for a visit (or 2) he treated Africa as home and probably died there. How would I find out if he was entitled to a land grant for his service, and where that might have been. This may help us locate where he died.
Thank you.
