I'll assume you are talking about 2399 Private 2nd Battalion, he joined the Army, the Somerset LI on the 28th of November 1888 from the Militia, their 4th Battalion, an eighteen year old labourer from Bath, recalled for the Anglo Boer War, very much, an old sweat and a fairly typical Thomas Atkins, he served in South Africa with the 2nd Somerset LI from the 4th of November 1899 to the 3rd of December 1901, a very complete and interesting set of papers survive in WO96 and WO97 at Kew.
