I had a look in the book "Recipients of the Distinguished Conduct Medal" for SA and also in the book of Distinguished Service Order recipients (just in case he was an officer - you did not mention his rank!) and there is no entry under either of the names you posted. Sometimes, family history gets a bit confused about medals - and a hard-earned medal or two can be assumed to be something else. Perhaps you might tell us of the Regiment or unit your GGF served in?
Regards
IL.

Hi Linneyl,

Thanks for your reply, unfortunately I do not know his rank, he was born in Fife Scotland I believe he lied about his age so he could enlist fairly common practice back then apparently, supposedly saved members of his troupe, brigade, battalion or similar by sounding a bugle and warning of enemy approach, I know at some stage I believe after this apparent incident he served in the Black Watch, when I was young I saw him marching on ANZAC Day and at RSL ( Returned Solders League) functions dressed in in his uniform.
I am also attempting to trace information through the RSL some records have been lost and misplaced when his branch was combined with another , so the going is slow and I am trying to pursue all avenues, it may well turn out to be a family myth just want get a definitive answer .
