My Grandfather, Johannes Lukas Groenewald Havenga, was a rebel in the Anglo Boer War and became a prisoner. My understanding is that he was a prisoner on the Van Der Byl farm in the Caledon/or Napier/or Bredarsdorp are.

I have not found any leads to him, or the farm etc.

Attached is a newspaper clipping of him (on the right in the picture) being interviewed by Captain Pearce the Intelligence Officer.

Can anyone help? I am doing family research

Hi Sheila, welcome aboard. I had a quick look in the database of the Anglo-Boer War Museum in Bloemfontein but wasn't able to find any exact matches amongst the Rebels. There was a Lukas Harvenga for example which may well be him. If you haven't written to the museum already that might be an avenue to explore.

You could also try looking in the book "The Rebel Record South African War 1899 - 1902" by Taffy and David Shearing which lists all 15,433 known rebels.

Cheers,

Mark
