I am looking for information about my grandfather John William Wyld. Born 1876 Dawley, Shropshire. My father, Jack told me he was in the Boer war. I don't know much other than that. Any help and information would be greatly appreciated. Roger

Wyld, served in the South Staffordshire Regiment as 4374 Private Wyld, after joining on the 22nd of November 1894, with actual service in South Africa during the Anglo Boer War from the 30th of November 1899 until the 31st of August 1902, earning both medals, he saw the campaign from it's beginning to it's particularly unpleasant end before his transfer to the Reserve on the 1st of October 1902 and his eventual discharge on the 19th of November 1906.

Thank you Frank for a prompt reply. You mentioned two medals what were they? Is it possible to get replacements of them or any other awards he received?

Thank you, Roger

Boxcarbob,

He earned the Queen's South Africa (QSA) and King's South Africa (KSA) Medals. The former with clasps Paardeberg, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Belfast and Cape Colony. (WO100/188p343) A note on the roll says he was detached from the regiment. The KSA with two clasps, South Africa 1901 South Africa 1902 is listed on roll WO100/333p152.

In terms of replacement, you can buy modern copies of QSAs and KSAs on ebay. Alternatively, you could purchase medals with similar clasps named to someone else who served in the SSR.

Kind regards
David
