Dear all,
I would appreciate any help searching for details regarding my Great Grandfather who served in the British army during the Boer war.
Information I currently have -

Name - Born Arnold Lewis, changed later to Arnold Levy.
Enlisted - Gave a false age while enlisting, real age was probably 16.
Service - Served under Baden-Powell at some stage and was apparently involved in the siege of Mafeking. Was taken as a prisoner of war by the Boer forces.

How could I find out more information about him ???
Thanks for any advice,
Eitan Green.

Eitan, welcome aboard. I just had a quick look at the medal rolls and casualty lists which list POWs and there are a lot of men by the name A Lewis and Levy listed. Is there any more you can give us? Do you know if he served as Lewis or Levy? Do you know if he was in an Imperial (UK) or colonial unit? Where was he from? Any info you can give us that can help narrow the list.

Cheers,

Mark

Dear Mark,
Thanks for your reply !
What I managed to discover what that he was born In England and joined the armed forces from there. After the war he remained in SA and spent the rest of his life there.
He was Jewish.
Another point was that he may have had a brother who also fought in the Boer war but on the Boer side, but that info is a bit cloudy...
Thanks for your help,
Eitan.

Eitan,

I had a look at the rolls for the Defence and Relief of Mafeking and there no exact matches.

In the defence, the nearest match was Richard Lewis.

In the relief, A W Lewis of the South Rhodesian Volunteers, A H Lewis in the Imperial Light Horse and A H Lewis of the South African Light Horse.

There are no Levys on either roll.

For the Boer side, there were several Lewis:

Barend Jacobus Lorens
Barend Jacobus Louis
Gideon Rudolf
Joseph Stephanus
Karel Barend Petrus
Petrus Jacobus

Dear David,
Thanks for your reply.
How could we find out more details regarding A H Lewis of the Imperial Light Horse ? He seems the only possible match...
Thanks,
Eitan.
