"A well-known Merthyr dentist, Lance-Corporal W. H. Phillips, Artists Rifles, whose widow lives at the Walk, has been killed in France after seven months in action, by a shell during an attack on a strong enemy position. He fought in South Africa throughout the Boer War in the Imperial Light Horse. An officer writes that he was a most useful N.C.O., universally liked by both officers and men, and had he been spared was assured of rapid promotion."

I've found the following three possibles for a match in the ILH nominal roll (assuming that the newspaper correctly reported the unit). Could William Henry Phillips be one of these three men?

1040 William Phillips, 2nd Company
1556 William Phillips, 2nd Company
2419 Henry William Phillips, 1st Company

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has him listed as: -
PHILLIPS, WILLIAM H.
Rank: Private
Service No: 764454
Date of Death: 30/10/1917
Regiment/Service: London Regiment (Artists' Rifles) 1st/28th Bn.
Panel Reference:Panel 153.
Memorial:TYNE COT MEMORIAL
