Does anyone know how I could find the names of soldiers who volunteered from Scotland, to serve in the Second Boer War? I'm trying to find out if my grandfather Donald McLean was there? He was a Lance Corporal upon entering the First World War, but got a field promotion to Corporal within weeks of arriving there. He was in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders but I think he volunteered for the Boer War. I just cant seem to find any information anywhere. Many thanks!

There is one D McLean in the ASH, probably a volunteer given the battalion numbers.

2494 Sgt D McLean. 4th ASH. QSA clasps CC and OFS on WO100/206p260. His name is crossed through on the 3rd ASH KSA roll (WO100/346p121) and the 3rd Btn supplementary roll (Wo100/206p188).

There are no service papers for this man to confirm whether this is him.

Hi, thanks for the info, I tend to think that one may not be him though as he was in the Scotland 1901 census in March that year when he was 20 years old and had no experience of the military yet, as he had been working as a farm hand till then, so I think he volunteered sometime in 1901 but he must have been a Private at the time, and that soldier is a Sergeant. A lot of service records appear missing, I find it hard to find Boer War records.

Which town or village was he living in in the 1901 census?
