I came upon his grave today, and, when I looked him up online, found that he commanded the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment in South Africa, between June 1901 and July 1902. Is there anything known about his service in South Africa?

Services of Boer War officers has "(m) Broun, M.A.W. (Hon. Col., Lt.-Col, Commondt 3 Bn S.Staff R) South African war 1901-2 - Dist. Commndt. Operations in Cape Colony, July 1901 to 31.5.02. Despatches, Lond. Gazette 31 Oct. 02. Queens Medal with three clasps". The bracketed "m" indicates Militia.
