"IMPULSIVE INSANITY"

Cause of South Shields Tragedy.

A verdict of "Wilful murder and suicide" was returned at the inquest at South Shields yesterday on Walter Lionel Baylass, Annie Baylass (his sister-in-law), and her two children, Walter and Olive.

Evidence was given that Baylass, who was formerly a chemist, had served in the Boer war. Five months ago he suffered from delusions, but since then he had seemed mentally right.

On the 13th inst., however, he shot his sister-in-law and her two children, and then shot himself. He had purchased the revolver on July 17, impersonating his brother - a river policeman - with whom he had latterly resided.

Medical evidence was to the effect that the man had been suffering from "impulsive insanity," and the doctor said it was not an uncommon thing for people to kill their nearest and dearest friends when in such a condition.
