Holy smoke! I never noticed that. Well-spotted. Did you enlarge the image of his grave for your photo?

When I saw the photo that you posted earlier, I did some looking around on the net and found some other photos of his grave

Cheers for that. Saves me having to go down there.

A couple of references I've found to him -

Major A. H. Bayley, 6th Manchester Regiment, was one of 23 officers of the Corps of Mounted Infantry which left London for South Africa, on Monday 15th April 1901.

Mr. A. H. Bayley, of Crewe, attended a council meeting of the Lancashire and Cheshire Division of the National Union of Conservative Associations held at Chester on Saturday, 9th May 1903. One of the points discussed was army expenditure.

He was on board the steamship Orotava, as an invalid, when it left Cape Town on 23rd December 1901.
The Times, Thursday 2nd January 1902

Arrived back in England, at Southampton, in the Oratava, on Saturday 11th January 1902, still listed as an invalid.
The Times, Monday 13th January, 1902

He was a successful candidate at the final examination for the Institute of Chartered Accountants, in December 1904, and received a certificate of merit.
The Times, Saturday, 14th January 1905

Excellent, it would be good to know whether he returned either because of being wounded or from sickness.
His son was awarded the MC during World War 1, but appears to have been killed right towards the end of war in 1918

He is not listed as wounded, so I suspect he was ill when invalided.

I cannot find him on the rolls for the SA01 clasp, and it would appear from the shipping lists he was not entitled to SA02 either - unless he returned to SA before 31-05-1902. Both the dates clasps are on the grave.
