Hi,
I hope someone can help me on this matter. My Grandfather William Stevenson served with the Scottish Horse Nov 1901 until 7th June 1902 when he was sent to the Coronation of King Edward VII which was to take place on 26th June, however because of his appendix, the coronation was postponed untill 9th August. What would have happened? Would William have been sent home or would he have been billeted somewhere until the Coronation? Would he have recieved the Coronation Medal.
I have his military doc's and have put a history of his military service together (inc WWI (BW) & WWII (HG))as I have with most of the family, but this Coronation thing I'm having probs with.
I look forward to any input
Bob

Hello Bob.....

I have three medals that are in the same situation..... It seem that some of the Colonial troops were sent home or back to where they came from and only the ones that actually took part in the Coronation in August got the medal.....

Two of my men were from Canada and one from South Africa..... One Canadian and the South African went back for the actual Coronation.....

Hi Bob

The National Archives file WO127-23 lists the Colonial contingents to the 1902 Coronation. I found an entry for 863a SSM A M Stephenson of the 1st Scottish Horse, who was discharged in England on 20/9/1902.

Presumably the different initials and spelling of the surname means this was not your grandfather?

Regards
Brett

Hi all'
Re the above and 37173 William Stevenson, I have studied his SH papers i copied at the Nat Archives and they state on the SH medal entitlement (QM) he was sent to the Coronation on 7th Jun 1903 this doc signed and place dated "Blair Atholl 30th April 1903".
Also on SH register for William it States "Discharged in England by Staff Payent I Yeo, WG paid informed by C Payent "H" Dist".
Half the men on this list have this and the other half have "Discharged 15th Oct 1902", and mentions Main Bks, 3 officers and 25 other ranks in all (inc SSM Stephenson, Brett ) some paid off in late Sept-early Oct but discharged 15th Oct.
William is on the list as piper (a good one by all accounts, even taught)although they've put intial J instead of W.
Question? What is difference between Date discharged and "Discharged in England" etc, Where was "main bks", what is staff payent WG etc ( I know "I Yeo", is Imperial Yeomanry) and is this the difinitive Coronation list (I hope so!!)

Thanks for any help, Bob
