RESERVIST'S SHOCKING END.
____________

AFTER GALLANTRY - CONSUMPTION AND SUICIDE.
A deed of pathetic sadness has to be recorded in the death of a Liverpool Reservist, recently invalided home from South Africa. Private William Geddes for upwards of twelve years served in the army. At the end of that time, having completed his service, in the natural order of things he became a Reservist. When the Transvaal War commenced, Geddes, who was then just twenty-nine years of age, rejoined the colours, and was drafted to the front. He was then in the enjoyment of excellent health, and a bright, blithe young fellow. Arduous military duty on the veldt, however, told its tale, and he was sent home on the invalided list. When he went out, as above indicated, he was in perfect health, but he returned a physical wreck, broken in spirit and in body - a consumptive, in fact. He resided in Kinmel Street, off High Park Street, Liverpool. As can well be supposed, his enfeebled and only too hopeless state of body was accompanied by depression, though no one suspected for a moment that he had conceived the idea of self-destruction. If report speak true, however, on Monday he cut his throat in a terrible manner. He was found with a fearful gash in his neck, and well-nigh breathing his last. The horse ambulance was summoned without delay, and poor Geddes was removed to the Royal Southern Hospital. All that medical skill could accomplish was unavailing, and death supervened shortly after his admission into the institution. It is on record that poor Geddes' service in the field was characterised by conspicuous gallantry, hence his death under the circumstances above narrated is clouded with tragic melancholy.

Dundee Evening Telegraph, Wednesday 25th September 1901

Edit - He was William Owens Geddes, born in 1871, and his death was registered in the third quarter of 1901, in Toxteth Park, Liverpool.
