Major Edward Robertson Gordon, my gr gr gr uncle, was co-author with Major Forrester Farnell Colvin of Diary of the Ninth Lancers in South Africa 1899-1902 (London, 1904). I've written this account of his service in the war, including several photographs never previously published. I'm very grateful to Angela Tarnowski of the 9th/12th Royal Lancers Museum in Derby for her help with my research and for allowing me to reproduce the photos from the regimental collection included in my account.

Thanks very much for these replies. When I first saw those named group photos in the 9th/12th Lancers museum collection I thought there would be others out there who might like to see them, so I was really pleased when the curator Angela Tarnowski gave me permission to post them in this way. My favourite is the one of them lying around at the Modder River. Quite apart from my connection with Edward Gordon, the coincidence of my mother's father and his brother also being in the 9th Lancers (during the First World War) gives these images a real immediacy for me - my grandfather worked in the 2nd Cavalry Brigade HQ for part of the war so knew many of the senior officers of the regiment personally, including several who had been subalterns in the Boer War and are in those photos. He often spoke to me about these officers, several of whom he greatly admired.
