Can anyone provide me info on Trooper Hayes from the Protectorate Regiment? according to Creswicke's book he was a bit of a scroundrel. He was the traitor who guided Commandant Eloff's Boers into Mafeking in May 1900 in their unsuccessful final assault. According Creswicke, "Trooper Hayes swaggered about in the presence of the prisoners adorned with Colonel Hore's sword, and his watch and chain", it appears that he even offered to help in the execution of the whole lot of Hore's brave band.

We may be related, not the scoundrel part, but by geneaology. I would like to find out what anyone here knows or can point me in the direction of some online resources that may give me some leads.

In Colin Walker's Mafeking Siege Register there is mention of one 416 Tpr E.J. Hay of A sqn, Protectorate Regt and his being seen with Col. Hore's sword, etc. Worth looking it up.
