I am trying a new angle to trace my Great-grandfather.

I have only the information on the attached photo. A jewellery box carved by him on St Helena, while there.

I have searched the records on this page: www.angloboerwar.com/other-information/8...-for-boers-st-helena

The results are inconclusive:
Smith Charles John
Smith Christoffel Jacobus
Smith Jan

I wonder if there are any moreinformation to be found here with you?

Input will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Sandra
Kind regards

Hello Sandra

What are the names of your Great-grandfather? I have a list of 49 Pow names (Smith) starting with initial "J" on my database. Do you know where he lived during the time of the ABW and also his age?

Regards
Elmarie

Thanks Elmarie. Since my post I have found someone who is also doing his tree and we are far-off related. He was able to give me the names of both JC Smith and his wife. I have found a marriage record on 29/12/1891 they were both 27. They got married in the FS, but my grandfather was born in the cape in 1893. So by my calculations he was 38 in 1902. His names are Jacobus Johannes Cornelis SMITH.

There are 4 Johannes Jacobus Smiths of the POW list.
In age, this is the closest guy:

No Surname Names Captured Date Camp Age
6450 Smith Dani Paardeberg 27-02-1900 Broadbottom 37

By name it will be one of these 4:
No Surname Names Captured Date Camp Age
2081 Smith Johannes Jacobus Paardeberg 27-02-1900 47
2088 Smith Johannes Jacobus Paardeberg 27-02-1900 24
4148 Smith Johannes Jacobus Paardeberg 27-02-1900 49
6448 Smith Johannes Jacobus Paardeberg 27-02-1900 18

But their ages are wrong.

I hope you can shed more light.
