Hi all,

My GG Grandfather Redmond Sheehan was in the 1st Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment. I have an original portrait of him taken during his service and it seems to have been taken in Middelburg but I cannot pinpoint the year nor the photographer's name on the bottom left... I can't find any record of the 1st Battalion being stationed in Middelburg, only in Lydenburg under Col. Park as his diary and the history books confirm.

Would anyone be able to help me as to why his portrait was taken in Middelburg and perhaps the name of the photographer on the bottom of the portrait attached? (J.K Baccaud?)

I reckon this photo was taken c.1901 but of course I'm open to correction!

Many thanks and keep safe,

Alex Lanigan.

Alex,

Like Pete, I think the photographer is J K Barrand.

According to this site: www.ancestors.co.za/photographers-of-the...ury-in-south-africa/

Barrand, J. K. with Thornhill, Tarkastad 1889-94, East London 1894, P.O. Box 33 Middelburg 1898-99.

Alex,

While Stirling does not mention Middelburg, the RIR were at Pretoria and then Belfast with Middelburg being on the line between the two so it is possible that he was there in early 1901.

Hi David, thanks very much for the info. I've found another photo online that seems to be very similar, was taken in Middleburg also and the photographer is J.K Barraud, though I cannot find anything on the internet about a J.K Barraud. Yes my GG Grandfather was in Belfast in January 1901.
